We went to Austria to see in the 2004/2005 new year.
A store specialising in t-shirts for Americans.
While in Salzburg we went on a tour of the Salzgammergut region. It has many lakes, surrounded by little villages.
A village in the Salzgammergut region.
Some of the best ski runs in the world are in Austria. It was wasted on us though - we never got off the bunny-slopes.
Bema posing.
The view from a bridge in Salzburg.
On the hill overlooking Salzburg is the Festung Hohensalzburg (Salzburg Fortress), which has fantastic views over the city.
View from the Festung Hohensalzburg (Salzburg Fortress).
All around the Festung Hohensalzburg are pictures of turnips. They were the symbol of the king that built the fortress.
I think if I was a powerful king, I would choose something a bit more awe-inspiring than a turnip as my symbol.
A Mozart themed public toilet in Vienna.
This building is on a hill at the bottom of the gardens in Schonbrunn Palace. These days it is a beautiful cafe where you can have a coffee while looking out over the gardens.
This is the view from the Riesenrad - a huge Ferris wheel in the Volksprater amusement park. It has featured in the spy movies "The Third Man" and "The Living Daylights".
An Austrian police car in Vienna.
Mozart was born in Salzburg and lived in Austria for most of his life. The locals are all too keen to boast about the fact. Mozart is used to sell everything, from liquor to perfume. Here is a cardboard cut-out of Mozart, advertising Mozart brand chocolates. I'm sure it is what he would have wanted.
One of the things I love most about Austria is the lack of crime. All the newspapers are sold by the honesty system. You put your coins in the little locked box and take your paper.
