In August 2003 I went to Kyrgyzstan to meet my partner's family.

Barf

There is a company that makes a range of cleaning products called 'Barf'.
They make lots of different stuff, like soap or clothes washing powder.
Their company slogan translates into English as 'White as snow, clean as Barf'.

Orto-Sai Market

These are photos of the Orto-Sai food market in Bishkek.
There was heaps of weird stuff for sale, from different pollens, to every shape of pasta that you could think of.

doctor  This is the sign above the door to a doctor's office. I hope it says something like 'Doctors surgery - all welcome'. fastandfurious  This is a poster advertising the movie 'The Fast and the Furious 2'. Note the word at the bottom is how they have translated 'The Fast and the Furious' in Russian. holyplace  This is one of many holy places around the country. There is a natural spring coming out of the side of the mountain, which the locals consider holy. weed  Marijuana grows wild in Kyrgyzstan. These are some plants we found by the side of the road when we were walking near Bishkek. beach  This is one of the beaches at lake Issuk-Kul. Although the temperature at the beach was in the high thirties, you can see snow on the mountains in the background. camp  This is a real Kyrgyz camp. We stopped here to go horse riding and have lunch, including the national drink - fermented mare's milk. donkey  Me and a friend I made. donkeyboy  The Kyrgyz are brilliant horse riders. They start from a very early age. hail2  We were walking along the street in typical hot summer weather, when we were hit with a freak hail storm.

The Russian word for otter is 'nutria', so we called our otter Natasha Nutria. Natasha liked stale bread and biscuits. petrolprices  "I'll have 20 litres of super, please." russianPool  Russian pool is weird. There is only one coloured ball, all the rest are white. The balls are about twice as big as normal, they only just fit in the pockets. rocks  There is a big park near lake Issyk-Kul, which has dozens of ancient drawings carved on rocks. toad  There was a big monument which was lit up at night and these huge toads would come out at night to catch insects that were drawn to the lights.
